Meet Our Teachers
Brian Shaw - Pianist, Composer, & Teacher
About Brian…
Brian Shaw began his musical studies at age five — first with piano and then many other instruments while always maintaining piano as his primary instrument. Brian Shaw holds a Bachelor of Music degree in classical piano performance, music theory and composition from Northwestern University (now the Bienen School of Music), and has also studied jazz and commercial music at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Brian has had diverse musical interests and has worked as a professional musician, composer, arranger, sound designer, and recording engineer in many different genres. He has performed on nationally broadcast TV commercials and with grammy award winning musicians and TV personalities. Currently Brian performs in jazz ensembles, as a solo pianist for events, and as a collaborative pianist in several choirs, musical theater productions, and orchestras in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. Brian works with beginning to advanced students, accompanies young musicians as a collaborative pianist and teaches adults and children ages 7 and up.
Sujatha Maheshwari - Flutist & Teacher
About Sujatha…
Sujatha is a flutist whose musical exploration began with the piano at the age of 7. A couple years later at age 9 she started playing the flute. Her mentors include renowned flutists Alberto Almarza and Paula Robison, with whom she studied at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. At NEC she received a Bachelor of Music in Classical Flute Performance.
A child of Indian immigrants, Sujatha was immersed in the sounds of Indian music from a young age, which has greatly influenced the way she hears and relates to music. She now blends a variety of sounds and forms in her unique style. Original music from her 2024 album The Great Intimacy has been set to contemplative prose by Sufi poets Ayn-al-Qużāt Hamadānī and Hafiz, read by Samaneri Jayasara on the internationally beloved Wisdom of the Masters channel on YouTube. Sujatha performs in solo and chamber music recitals in and around the San Francisco Bay Area.
Sujatha works with adults and children ages 7 and up, teaching both how to read sheet music and how to improvise. Her approach to learning flute blends structured tutorials with creative exploration, guiding students to follow the joyful flow of artistic movement and develop their innate musicality.
Sujatha loves working with beginners picking up an instrument for the first time, seasoned musicians wishing to deepen their craft, and students at all skill levels who love playing music. She tunes into each student’s musical interests and passions and guides them to express themselves through music. During this process, students will learn the foundations of the instrument, how to read and interpret music, and how to work with scales and chords to compose and improvise their own music.
