Reviews from Students
“Sujatha is very kind and patient and has a wonderful energy that my daughter responds to. She seems to really enjoy teaching, which makes all the difference. She also invited us to her recent concert so we got to hear her play and my daughter loved it and was very inspired!”
~ Chloe D., mother of 9 y.o. student
“Sujatha is by far the best music teacher I've ever had. My flute playing is now growing in leaps and bounds. Sujatha's lessons are joyful, enthusiastic, fast-paced, and targeted to just what I need. Despite my amateur abilities, she treats my musical aspirations with deep respect, and challenges me right to the edge of what I’m capable of, so that my playing abilities swiftly grow.”
~ Scott S., adult student
“My son has been learning flute with Sujatha, and we are truly impressed. She is passionate, dedicated, and knows her students well. My son is very happy learning with her, and we are grateful to have found such a thoughtful and sincere teacher.”
~ Heather Z., mother of 15 y.o. student
A little about Sujatha as a professional flutist
Sujatha is a flute player whose musical exploration began with the piano at the age of 7. Her mentors include world-renowned flutists Alberto Almarza and Paula Robison, with whom she studied at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. At NEC she received a Bachelor of Music in Classical Flute Performance. Several years later she became an improvisational artist and began composing original music.
A child of Indian immigrants, Sujatha was immersed in the sounds of Indian music from a young age, which has greatly influenced the way she hears and relates to music. She now blends a variety of sounds and forms in her unique style. In 2024 she released her second album of original compositions and improvisations entitled The Great Intimacy, produced by Christopher Krotky. Sujatha performs Western classical music in solo and chamber music recitals, as well as Indian fusion crossover music with her world music ensemble Transparent Radiance in and around the San Francisco Bay Area, California.
Sujatha’s approach as a flute teacher
Sujatha works with adults and children ages 8 and up, teaching both how to read sheet music and how to improvise. Her approach to learning flute blends structured tutorials with creative exploration, guiding students to follow the joyful flow of artistic movement and develop their innate musicality.
Sujatha loves working with:
beginners picking up an instrument for the first time
seasoned musicians wishing to deepen their craft
students at all skill levels who love playing music.
She tunes into each student’s musical interests and passions and guides them to express themselves through music. During this process, students will learn the foundations of the instrument, how to read and interpret music, and how to work with scales and chords to compose and improvise their own music.
